A field visit to Salalah Protection Dam
On 25th of April 2024, Department of Water Resources in Dhofar Governorate, in cooperation with Dhofar University, organized a field visit for CIVE 340 Engineering Hydrology of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the College of Engineering. The students, along with their course instructor, Dr. Mahaad Issa Shammas, chair of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering listened to Eng. Mohammed Khalafan Shamas, the head of Dams at Department of Water Resources, who delivered an on-site lecture outlining the designs and drainage systems of the Salalah Dam, focusing on flood prevention measures. Additionally, he addressed aspects such as the dam’s catchment area, storage capacity, and the volume of water retained by the dam during Cyclone Mekunu in May 2018. This visit aimed to acquaint the students with the importance and operation of the Salalah Protection Dam to protect against the dangers of floods. It further signifies the continued cooperation between Dhofar University and the Directorate.
