College of Engineering Students Excel in National Research Competition with Study on Restorative Architecture

Three undergraduate students from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Dhofar University—Biah Asif, Wadeemh Fatek Al-Sakkaff, and Rahma Mohammed Iqbal—have achieved a remarkable milestone by securing second place in the Engineering Category at the 4th National Research Competition (DURC 2025). Their award-winning research, titled “Healing and Restorative Architecture: Analyzing the Perceived Restorativeness of the Koofan Traditional House in Taqa, Oman,” was conducted under the expert mentorship of Dr. Fatemeh Khozaei.

The study explores the role of biophilic elements in Oman’s traditional architecture, specifically analyzing how these features contribute to healing and restorative environments. By focusing on the Koofan Traditional House in Taqa, the research delves into the ways natural patterns, organic forms, and cultural architectural expressions promote psychological and physiological well-being.

This research emphasizes the necessity of preserving Oman’s rich architectural heritage while adapting its time-tested principles into contemporary design. The findings advocate for a more human-centered approach in architectural planning, aligning with global sustainability and cultural conservation efforts.

The students’ achievement not only reflects their dedication to academic excellence but also highlights the College of Engineering’s commitment to fostering high-caliber research and innovation in architecture. Their success at DURC 2025 serves as an inspiration for future scholars and underscores the significance of integrating traditional wisdom with modern sustainable practices.
