Dhofar University Discusses Human Rights in AI Era
Dhofar University Centre for Career Services and Alumni invited lawyer Ahmed bin Salem Al Masrori to a virtual talk via ‘Zoom’ entitled ‘Human Rights and Artificial Intelligence’. This talk translates Dhofar University’s efforts to raise awareness of current issues and highlight the importance of human rights in the digital age. In his talk, Mr. Al Masrori addressed the growing effects of artificial intelligence on the rights of individuals and communities. He also highlighted the remarkable challenges the world is facing as a result of the unprecedented reliance on these technologies, including privacy issues, justice, combating discrimination, and ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of artificial intelligence. Mr. Al Masrori argued that, despite its ability to improve quality of life, AI may carry risks if it is not developed and used within defined ethical and responsible constraints. The speaker urged the participants to reflect on striking a balance between technological advances and the protection of human rights, noting that “innovation and fundamental human values must live in tandem.” It is worth mentioning that the talk is organized in the framework of outreach events to enhance students’ and graduates’ awareness of global issues and human rights challenges in the digital age out of the University’s commitment to its educational and societal role in enriching and promoting intellectual dialogue on contemporary issues.
