Scheduled for September 3-4, 2023, under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al-Habsi, Minister of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources, the sessions of the second International Frankincense Symposium are due to commence. Organized by Dhofar University under the theme “Advancing Plant-Based therapy,” the symposium will take place at the university’s Conference Hall in Salalah. The event will see the participation of international scholars and researchers from over 13 countries, including Germany, France, Switzerland, Australia, India, China, and the United States.
The symposium spans two days and includes the presentation and discussion of 45 scientific research papers, alongside lectures and recent studies concerning local plants and frankincense. Notable attendees include delegations from universities and scientific institutes in Germany, France, Switzerland, Australia, India, China, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Morocco. Ministries of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Ministry of Health, along with Dhofar University, Sultan Qaboos University, Eastern University, and the National University of Science and Technology, are actively participating. This symposium also presents a valuable opportunity for Omani researchers and postgraduate students to engage in meaningful exchanges.
The symposium sessions and scientific discussions are organized into two tracks. The first track is dedicated to biology and pharmacology, focusing on the frankincense tree’s past, present, and future. It delves into topics such as preserving and propagating the frankincense tree, the impact of various environments, and the economic feasibility of frankincense, including its historical use by Omani ancestors. Additionally, a comparative analysis of Omani frankincense resin and the effectiveness of frankincense resin from different countries where it grows will be explored.
The second track encompasses the fields of chemistry, synthesis, and the making of dietary supplements and cosmetic products. Alongside the symposium sessions, there will be an accompanying exhibition featuring companies operating in various frankincense-related product domains.
