      e Prospects of a Translation Movement in Oman vis-à-vis the Renaissance
  Translation is a cross-cultural,intellectual activity which contributes to cross-cultural communication and the transfer of all forms of
  knowledge. e English critic and poet I. A. Richards (    )described translation as “the most complex type of event yet produced in the
  evolution of the cosmos” (p.    ).  ere is little doubt that throughout the history of human civilizations translation movements coincided
  with intellectual revival and renaissance. During the Abbasid era, translation prospered as a medium for the transfer of knowledge from
  di€erent languages of the world, including Greek, Indian, Persian and others, leading to “the development of Arab science”
  (Selim,       Q    ). A…er a long period  of intellectual slumber, renaissance thrived in Medieval Europe thanks to the translation movement
  which led to “the spread of education and western culture in the New and  ird Worlds”(Patil,       Q   ).  e modern nahda movement
  that took o€ from Egypt at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century (Selim     ) spreading to other
  countries in the Middle East was the fruit of the translation movement which blossomed as a result of scholarly and cultural exchanges
  between Egypt and Europe. In the Sultanate of Oman, HM Sultan Haitham bin Tarek underscored the value of establishing a center for
  Arabization and translation, which can function as a building bock and corner stone in the nahda countrywide. It is no surprise that

  translation is being revived in Oman as it is leading a century-old renaissance movement at all fronts and in all ‹elds of knowledge. On
  the institutional level, the Omani Ministry of  Heritage and Culture embraced translation as a medium for translating valuable books and
  encyclopedia with the purpose of documenting the Omani works of literature and history. All works translated by Muhammad Amin
  Abdulla al-Bastaki were sponsored by MOHC. Al-Bastaki translated    books about the history of Oman, all of which were sponsored by
  the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Culture. Later on, al-Bastaki was awarded the honorary title of the sheikh of translators in Oman and
  the Gulf for his contributions in documenting the history of Oman by translating relevant English works into Arabic.
  Most notable is the role played by the intellectual institution Bait Al Zubair with its Translation Lab. Since the beginning of the new
  millennium, national fora were organized by these institutions to highlight the role of translation in the revival of the country and to

  encourage translators and publishing houses to step up their e€ort in the transfer of diverse works of science, history, literature, to name a
  few.  e role of institutions in encouraging translation, both as an intellectual movement and a medium of transferring knowledge, was
  further reinforced by launching translation programs in di€erent Omani universities like Sultan Qaboos University, Dhofar University,
  Sohar University, and Nazwa University. Translation groups were also established on the level of students in di€erent academic institutions
  and under the supervision of specialized academic resources.  e cultural and academic institutions in Oman provided the much-needed
  platforms for translation fora that brought together hundreds of translators in Oman.  is networking provides the umbrella which
  encourages young translators, motivates them and combines their e€orts in every possible way. Oman takes pride in the achievements of its
  young people as a nation which gave birth to leading intellectuals and remarkable translators who have enriched the national as well as
  Arabic heritage with all types of translated works in all ‹elds of knowledge. No one can deny the contributions made by young translators
  like Hilal al-Hajri (in his academic, creative translations of English poetry), Ahmad al-Ma’ni who has translated over    books into Arabic),

  Fahd alSaidi (in his translations of children literature), Saleh al-Falahi (in translating scienti‹c works), Badr alJuhuri, Sulaiman al-Khiyari,
  khalidal-blushi, Muhamad al-Uraimi, Aiman al-‘Uwisi (for his role in both text translation and conference interpreting)and many other
  translators. Omani women have also contributed to the recent translation movement. Examples include Zuwaina Al Tuwaiya, Reem
  Dawood, Zawan al-Sabti, ‘Uhood al-Makhini, Fatma al-Ajmi and others. Oman has the rich heritage, the institutional platforms on the
  academic, professional and scholarly levels, as well as the intellectuals to bless an everlasting marriage between its national renaissance and
   a sustainable translation project that marks the beginning of life-long  revival in all disciplines without an exception.
