13. Students with Special Needs
13.1. Introduction
Students with special needs are the students with different physical conditions which affect their
day-to-day life and also learning abilities. Due to these different physical conditions, their
academic needs may not be satisfactorily met within the traditional classroom environment. They
need additional and special attention depending on their requirements. DU has a set of
procedures for dealing with students with special needs and adequate facilities are made
available to them to cope with the situation.
13.2. Procedure for dealing with Students with Special Needs
1) A student with special needs shall be admitted to DU through the Department of Admission
and Registration (DAR).
2) Once a student with special needs is admitted to DU, the DAR personnel shall get in touch
with the concerned College (FP) and inform them about the admission of such student.
3) The DAR personnel shall also bring the student with special needs to the concerned college
(FP) and introduce him/her to the College Dean (FP Director).
4) The student shall then be assigned an academic advisor, who would guide and help
him/her in registering the courses and all throughout the semester.
5) Once the student has registered for the courses, a meeting of all the faculty members who
shall be teaching the student shall be convened.
6) These faculty members are required to:
accommodate the special needs of the student,
make the teaching material accessible and available for the student,
give the student an opportunity to record the lectures if needed,
send the student’s exam dates and venue to the Learning Support Center (LSC)
coordinator to arrange for scribes.
13.3. Facilities made available to Students with Special Needs
Various facilities available at DU for student with special needs are:
1) All DU buildings have lifts and ramps for physically challenged students.
2) Dedicated washroom facilities with specific arrangements for physically challenged
students are available in all DU Buildings.
3) DU has allocated one room on the second floor of the main library building for physically
challenged students. The room serves as a rest area for them and it is equipped with a
computer, printer, tables, chairs and internet facility.
4) Voice recorders are provided to visually challenged students for recording the proceedings
during the normal classes.
